FAKE RETAIL APPS ARE POPPING UP FOR THE HOLIDAY SHOPPING SEASON

With the holiday shopping season just around the corner, the Better Business Bureau is warning iPhone owners about fake retail apps popping up in Apple’s app store that will steal your information. Kirby Davis has more information about this latest scam…

Counterfeiters have impersonated themselves as retail chains like Dollar Tree, Foot Locker, department stores and online retailers such as Zappos.com. These apps camouflage themselves as the real thing, but they contain malware to steal a person’s information such credit card and banking info; they can also lock your phone until the user pays a ransom to be able to use it again. To protect yourself, the BBB urges you to read the appā€™s reviews before downloading them, never click on a link in an email, and if you do download an app, give as little information as possible and donā€™t link your credit card to the app.
