EXTREME HEAT CONTINUES, OFFICIALS ASK FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION

The first day of summer featured an Extreme Heat warning and the heat will remain in triple digits well into next week, according to the National Weather Service. Summer officially began at 3:34 p.m. Monday. By 5 p.m., daytime temperature records were set in several Riverside County cities including Palm Springs, which reached 122 degrees; no records were broken in San Bernardino County. Twentynine Palms reached 114 degrees and Yucca Valley 108. Forecasters said it would be a “little cooler” today. The regional forecast calls for Twentynine Palms to peak at 113 and Yucca Valley at 106 degrees today and Wednesday. The sweltering heat is expected to return next weekend. Saturday through Monday will bring Morongo Basin highs in the 100s. Officials with the California Independent System Operator, a nonprofit corporation that operates the high voltage grid in California, issued a Flex Alert Monday morning for Southern California. The call for consumers to conserve electricity is the first such warning by the agency this year. A spokesman for California ISO said they are issued when the temperatures climb to excessively high levels and officials fear the conditions will create a strain on the state’s power grid, leaving it susceptible to outages. About 20,700 Southern California Edison customers were without power Monday afternoon, said spokeswoman Mary Ann Milbourn. As warm days continue, so will the stress on utilities. Utility companies ask that thermostats be kept above 78 degrees and use major appliances only after 9 p.m. Local cooling centers are; In Yucca Valley, the community center open noon to 5 Monday through Thursday; town offices Monday through Thursday 8 to 5. In Twentynine Palms the Senior Center on Adobe Road will be open days and evenings.
