EASTBOUND I-10 CLOSED AFTER FATAL CRASH IN CABAZON

The eastbound I-10 freeway was closed for almost four hours at Cabazon after a FedEx truck slammed into stalled flatbed truck, killing the driver, 59-year old Miguel Rolon of Thermal. The crash occurred at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday between Main Street and Haugen Lehman Way, according to a CHP traffic advisory. All eastbound lanes were back open by 3:11 p.m. Rolon’s flatbed truck stalled in the No. 3 lane on the freeway shortly after 11 a.m., and he was standing on the truck trying to wave down drivers to warn them of the situation. That’s when a FedEx truck clipped the side of the flatbed truck as the driver tried to swerve to the left and avoid the collision. Authorities said Rolon was thrown onto the road and died at the scene. The driver of the Fed Ex truck and his passenger sustained minor injuries. The FedEx truck also spilled a 50-gallon diesel tank on the roadway, prompting Hazmat to respond to the crash. Two other semi-trucks collided with debris and were partially damaged. Officers said alcohol and drugs weren’t factors in the crash. Eastbound drivers took alternate routes or endured delays.
