EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS TIPS

Earthquakes are a common occurrence here in the Morongo Basin. We’ve been lucky in that we haven’t had a major quake with damage for many years, and so some of us may not know what to do in case of an earthquake. Assignment reporter Corrisa Evans offers some tips on what to do when—not if—an earthquake strikes…
An earthquake is going to happen, maybe not today or tomorrow but one will happen again. Now, before it happens, is the time to learn what to do to decrease the chances of injury or death. First, if you are indoors stay away from windows or anything that could fall and duck or drop to the floor and hold on. If outside take cover in an open area that is away from buildings and power lines. After the earthquake check for injuries, look for and put out small fires and gas leaks. If your home received damage get out. Listen to a battery operated radio for information and instructions. Finally, expect aftershocks, each time you feel one drop, cover, and hold on. Be safe and prepared for the next big one to happen.
