DUI DRIVER WHO KILLED LOCAL MOTORCYCLIST PLEADS GUILTY, FACES UP TO 10 YEARS

A Yucca Valley man pleaded guilty Friday to vehicular manslaughter while driving drunk in 2014, according to court records. David Hayes, 59, a popular drug and alcohol counselor, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on Highway 62 in Yucca Valley March 13, 2014, when his motorcycle was hit from behind by a Dodge Charger, driven by Christopher Hannon, now 24. Hayes was thrown onto the car’s windshield, and then carried on top of the car until the car crashed into and brought down a power pole near the Wamego intersection, at which time Hayes was thrown off the car. He died at the scene. Hannon was arrested in August 2014 and has been held at the West Valley Detention Center with his bail set at $250,000. Hannon has a previous conviction for DUI from 2013. Judge Rodney Cortez has set Christopher Hannon’s sentencing date for April 8, at which time he could face four to 10 years in prison.
