DROUGHT SUBJECT OF BASIN-WIDE FOUNDATION MEETING THURSDAY

Even though the state is in a drought condition, recent rains will be seeing some state project water released to the Yucca Valley area. Managing Editor Tami Roleff says conservation is still being urged….

Due to the statewide drought, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), announced that none of its 29 water contractors—which includes the Mojave Water Agency, which supplies water to the Hi-Desert Water District—would receive any water this year. However, after some storms passed through northern California in February and March, the DWR increased its water allocations from 0 to 5 percent. Hi-Desert Water District’s General Manager Ed Muzik said the District will be allotted 620 acre feet of water to replenish its local water supply. Muzik added, however, that the state is still in a drought and urges all Morongo Basin residents to conserve water. He added that once Yucca Valley’s sewer project is in full operation, it will collect and treat wastewater and reclaim the water back into the ground to replenish the local water supply, which will reduce the water district’s reliance on water from the DWR by one-third.
