DIRT BIKER ARRESTED AT GUNPOINT THURSDAY

A dirt biker was arrested at gunpoint after a foot pursuit through the desert in Twentynine Palms yesterday. According to a Sheriff’s report, Kevin Akins, 23, rode his dirt bike across Adobe Road near El Paseo about 10:40 Thursday morning, causing cars to slow and swerve to avoid hitting him. Deputy Lundee saw Akins and turned on his lights and sirens, but Akins took off eastbound behind businesses, then back to Adobe Road, causing more vehicles to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting him. Akins then turned on to a dirt road above the wash westbound at Buena Vista. The deputy was able to cut off Akins at the wash and Tamarisk. When Akins attempted to turn the dirt bike around, it tipped over, and Akins tried to flee on foot southbound on Tamarisk, then eastbound on Buena Vista. Deputy Lundee caught up to Akins in the 6200 block of Yucca Avenue and attempted to place him under arrest at gunpoint, but Akins continued to run until he was tackled in the open desert near Buena Vista and Smoke Tree Avenue. Kevin Akins was arrested for investigation of felony failure to yield and booked at the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $100,000.
