In a presentation at a special meeting of county supervisors yesterday the board received encouraging news that COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the county have stabilized over the past 30 days. The news represents a benchmark that opens the door for county government to allow some lower risk businesses and public spaces to begin reopening as soon as this Friday. County supervisors received news of the flattening of the curve with cautious optimism as they discussed how best to implement a plan for limited commercial re-openings and how best to keep businesses and the public informed. The task is tricky since much of the progress in slowing spread of the virus here is likely due to restrictions placed on commercial activity. The county has its work cut out for it since aid for any recovery plan will be contingent on following state guidelines. Those guidelines are not expected until tomorrow. If all goes well, Friday could see limited opening of clothing and sporting goods retailers, bookstores, and florists. Whether or not short-term vacation rentals will be added to that list remains to be seen. One thing for certain is that success of any reopening will depend in large part on the public’s use of faces masks, hand washing, and social distancing.
