COUNTY SEEKS TO DOUBLE LANDERS DUMP, EXTEND IT 50 YEARS, MEETING TOMORROW

Under existing permits, the Landers Landfill will reach capacity in 2018, but San Bernardino County wants to double the current capacity of the dump and extend its useful life for another 50 plus years. The county will lay out the plan for the public in a meeting tomorrow. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has details…
The County’s Department of Public Health will hold a community informational meeting on plans to expand the Landers dump from 44 acres to 92 acres. Set for 4 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, Dec. 21) at the Yucca Mesa Community Center, 3133 Balsa Ave. on the Mesa, attendees will hear details of the planned expansion and have an opportunity to comment. Comments will be recorded and considered by the state agency responsible for determining whether the existing landfill should be expanded or not. Landers Sanitary Landfill sits on 638 acres of which only 44 acres are presently used for solid waste disposal. If approved, the waste disposal boundary would more than double, but still encompass just a fraction of the total property. The Landers Landfill was originally projected to reach capacity in February 2013, but that date was extended to August 2018 due to far less material coming in than projected.
