COUNTY TO CONTINUE TURNING ARRESTEES OVER FOR DEPORTATION

San Bernardino County announced it will continue turning over to immigration officials some people it books for crimes. Dan Stork explains the 287g program, and relays some county statistics on its use…
San Bernardino County has renewed its participation in a federal program, under which people who have been booked for a crime can be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for possible deportation processing. In the first seven months of this year, about 1,300 arrestees in the County were subjected to a “287g detainer” which is the legal shorthand for the turnover procedure. The press release in which the Sheriff’s Department announced the renewal stressed that the number of 287g detainers is a small percentage of all bookings (about one of every 380 bookings). The press release went on to say that 50 percent of the charges related to detainers were for felonies, and “Despite widespread anecdotal claims that the majority of 287g detainers are for minor violations, the data shows that of the 1,289 detainers placed in the first half of the year, only 6 percent were traffic related.”
