COUNTY CHANGES BUILDING RULES TO ENCOURAGE IMPROVEMENTS

The County Board of Supervisors eliminated a provision in the Development Code that required property and business owners to pay for major paving projects when they applied for relatively minor additions or alterations to their property. A county spokesman said there have been several instances recently in which non-profits, businesses and homeowners have been required to pay for major road paving projects along the length of their property. This will free residents and businesses from the requirement and will allow a broad range of improvement projects to move forward. Under the modified ordinance, any expansion project or construction of an accessory structure that is less that 50 percent of the existing square footage would be exempt from the paving requirement. Construction of a dwelling unit would still trigger the requirement. The change to the Development Code is scheduled to take effect August 24 and will apply to unincorporated areas of the County.
