CLASS THIS SUNDAY: “ROCK ART OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: PALMS TO PINES”

The Desert Institute is offering a class that will bring students to sites of petroglyphs and pictographs in the lower desert. Courtesy photo

Discover the mystery of the enigmatic symbols left behind by the indigenous peoples with Archaeologist Daniel McCarthy. McCarthy will lead participants on an ancient path through pictographs and petroglyphs preserved in stone.

The class will be held on Sunday, February 16, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Students will meet at the Pilot Travel Center (SW corner of I-10 and N. Indian Canyon Drive.

The fee is $70 for Joshua Tree National Park members and $80 for non members.

This is a great opportunity to see these images and ponder their significance. The class will also include discussions of seasonal patterns, of the native peoples, their places of habitation, and the reason they traveled.

Participants will carpool from the Coachella Valley out to Corn Springs into the Salton Sea area and up to Idyllwild.
