CITIZEN’S PATROL CAR IN CRASH DURING FLOODING IN TWENTYNINE PALMS

A Citizens Patrol car was involved in a crash on Highway 62 in Twentynine Palms last Thursday following flash flooding on the highway. According to a Sheriff’s Department press release, heavy rain and flash flooding during the afternoon of August 29 left standing water, rocks, debris, and thick mud in portions of the number 2 westbound lane of the highway. Cory Akana-Tamburi, 27, of Murrieta, was driving his 2000 Subaru westbound in the # 2 lane approaching Encelia Avenue about 5:50 p.m. when he drove into a thick layer of mud on the roadway. He lost control of his vehicle and skidded into the eastbound number 2 lane, where it collided broadside into a Citizens Patrol vehicle driven by volunteer Ronald Thrower. The Subaru then struck the curb and came to rest on the sidewalk in front of a hotel in the 71800 block of 29 Palms Highway. The impact with the curb broke off the right rear wheel of the Subaru. Thrower, along with passengers and Citizens on Patrol volunteers Linda Vest and Elaine McElroy, were on their way to assist with a DUI checkpoint being held that night in Twentynine Palms. The Citizens on Patrol volunteers all reported minor complaints of pain following the collision and were treated and released at Hi-Desert Medical Center. Neither Akana-Tamburi nor his passenger reported any injuries.
