CALIFORNIA SCHOOL EXIT EXAM, CAHSEE, IS SUSPENDED

Two years after Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that suspended the California High School Exit Exam as a requirement for high school graduation, Brown signed another bill Tuesday that permanently repealed the exam. The exam, known as CAHSEE, was an attempt to have students show that they had basic competence in English and math before graduation. However, some students were not able to get their diplomas because, while they had passed all their coursework, they had not passed the exam. Education officials now say the CAHSEE is obsolete and the should be repealed. Students will now be able to graduate as long as they complete state-mandated coursework and any local requirements.
