CALIFORNIA CIGARETTE TAX GOES TO $2.87 A PACK STARTING SATURDAY

The cost of smoking cigarettes and vaping nicotine in California is going up Saturday. Managing Editor Tami Roleff gets out her calculator…
If you’re a smoker, the cost of your habit is going up on Saturday, April 1. Last November, California voters approved Proposition 56, an extra $2 per pack excise tax on cigarettes, (on top of the 87 cents already charged per pack) for a total of $2.87 in excise taxes per pack. That tax will also apply to other tobacco products and e-cigarettes that contain nicotine. Prop 56 will be allocated to physician training, prevention and treatment of dental diseases, Medi-Cal, tobacco use prevention, research into tobacco-related diseases, and school programs focusing on tobacco-use prevention and reduction. Even with a tax of $2.87 per pack on cigarettes, California does not have the highest taxes on cigarettes; Chicago, Illinois, imposes a tax of $6.16 per pack, and in New York City, it’s $5.85 per pack.
