Yucca Valley students who plan on riding their bike or scooter to school this fall should attend a free bicycle rodeo and program on Saturday. The Town of Yucca Valley and the Sheriff’s Department are hosting a Safe Routes to School program to help students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade prepare for riding to school. Children who attend the program and bicycle rodeo will receive free helmets and locks, and children who walk to school will receive a free back pack. Parents are encouraged to attend the event with their children. The event will be held from 9 to noon at the Yucca Valley Community Center and will feature McGruff the Crime dog. Safety tips for both riders and walkers will be discussed. There’ll also be bike safety checks and the proper use and fitting of helmets will be demonstrated. The bike rodeo will give children the opportunity to ride through an obstacle course and learn the rules of the road for bicycle safety. Bikes will be available for children who don’t bring their own. In addition, six new bicycles will be given away in a drawing at the end of the event.
