APPLE VALLEY MAN PLANS TO SHOOT MANNED, STEAM POWERED ROCKET FROM AMBOY

An Apple Valley man is planning to launch and ride in a steam-powered rocket at 500 miles per hour 1,800 feet over Amboy. Mike Hughes, 61, is a limo driver sponsored by and a member of the Flat Earth Society. This Saturday, November 25, Hughes plans to launch himself into the air to test his rocket that he wants to eventually take into space to see for himself if the Earth is flat. Hughes has spent the last few years building his $20,000 steam-powered rocketship himself in his garage from scraps and salvaged materials. On Saturday between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., Hughes will heat up 70 gallons of water and then blast off from an old air strip next to an abandoned hangar, going about a mile and reaching an altitude of about 1,800 feet into the air before releasing two parachutes to float down to Earth. Hughes is discouraging spectators due to safety issues, but plans to record the launch and televise it on his pay per view YouTube channel.
