The expansion of Theatre 29 got a green light tinged with orange at last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting. The message: definitely proceed, but do so with caution. Specifically, the Council directed staff to come back in 30 days with a better estimate of costs, which could exceed the $450,000 mentioned so far.

The proposed project calls, among other things, for increasing the theater’s capacity from 91 to 148, adding more parking, improving the stage and building an outdoor concert venue.

Several Council members, including Joel Klink, expressed strong support for the plan. “It’s awesome. I’m all in favor of going forward.”

In other business, the Council held a fourth public hearing on converting to district elections, decided to hire a part-time community events coordinator, and heard Mayor McArthur Wright and Councilman Daniel Mintz declare their intentions to run for re-election in 2018.
