50 PEOPLE TURN OUT FOR CALTRANS PRESENTATION IN MORONGO VALLEY

When Caltrans divided State Route 62 in Morongo Valley with delineators, many were skeptical of their claim that the plastic poles would enhance safety. But in the almost two years since they were installed cross median collisions there went from far above average to zero. Last night Caltrans presented their plan to further enhance safety by replacing the delineators with a permanent raised median. The announcement was met with a healthy dose of skepticism. Reporter Mike Lipsitz was there and brings us details on the project…
About 50 people turned out for last night’s Caltrans meeting in Morongo Valley. Up for discussion was the $3 million raised-curb median which will replace the temporary delineators that have divided the highway there since 2015. A team from Caltrans and a rep from Highland Construction, the company tasked with building the median, heard from a number of skeptics following an overview of the 5.7-mile long project. Construction is set to begin in the latter part of May and continue for two to four months. The four-inch-high rounded curb median between East Drive and Yucca Park Road will include left and U-turn points where they now exist with the addition of Rawson Road. A traffic signal with left turn arrow and crosswalk will be added at Bella Vista. Other safety enhancements, including reflectors and restriping, will be incorporated. Z107.7 News will bring you the latest on construction delays and other lane closures as the project gets underway.
