3 CAR CRASH, 4 INJURED, IN EVENING CRASH IN TWENTYNINE PALMS

The second crash occurred at about 5:30 Wednesday afternoon on the highway just west of Lear Avenue in the Indian Cove area. While details are still being gathered, Sheriff’s officials say the crash involved three vehicles and four victims with serious injuries, none fatal at this time. Responding firefighters from the Twentynine Palms and Combat Center Fire Department performed two extractions of victims using the Jaws of Life at the accident scene, which saw traffic diverted for hours last night. Fire Chief Jim Thompson said the extrications took over an hour because of the severity of the damage. Three different helicopters were brought in to land on the highway to transport victims to area hospitals. The debris field from the violent crash spread out over a half mile, with two vehicles literally mangled into unrecognizable balls of metal, and a third seriously wrecked. Overwhelmed Sheriff’s investigators were still working on crash details and victim identifications early this morning.
