The public is invited to the 29 Palms Art Gallery Saturday, January 13, for an opening reception and awards ceremony. Works will be judged by category: painting, drawing, photography, and other. Ribbons, cash and scholarship awards will be given for first, second and third place. First- and second-place winners will be invited to enter their work in the Annual Southern Region Youth Art Month competition in San Diego. A 12th grade student intending to attend Copper Mountain College this fall will be awarded a scholarship by the Copper Mountain College Foundation. The show will be on display through January 28. The reception starts at 5 p.m. at the art gallery, 74055 Cottonwood Drive in Twentynine Palms.

OPENING RECEPTION TONIGHT AT GALLERY 62

Gallery 62 Art Gallery will hold an opening reception tonight for its newest exhibition, Elegant Beginnings. The show will feature the artwork of Michael Maxwell, Karan Murphy, Kenneth Heller, Laurie Schafer and Esther Shaw. The signature artist is Watson. The opening reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery in downtown Joshua Tree. The show is on display through January 28.

Ketil Haugsand, a retired professor of harpsichord, will perform his popular recordings of J.S. Bach’s “Goldberg Variations.” Haugsand is known for his outstanding performances at many venues on multiple continents as a soloist. The opening night gala for “The Odd Couple” will benefit Soroptimist International of Twentynine Palms. Tickets for opening night ONLY are $25 each. The show opens Friday, January 19, at Theatre 29, with doors opening at 6 p.m. to heavy hors d’oeuvres and refreshments; plus a silent auction that includes art pieces, gift baskets and more. Get your tickets for the 50/50 drawing before the curtain rises at 7 p.m. with deserts served at intermission. The Neil Simon comedy is about two friends who decide to become roommates after both are divorced. The fastidious Felix moves in with the messy Oscar to find they are definitely an odd couple.

COPING WITH THE DEMANDS OF CAREGIVING DISCUSSED AT LIFETREE CAFÉ

The program, titled “Care for Caregivers: Meeting the Unique Needs of Those Who Sacrifice for Others,” features a screening of the short film “Life in Reverse.” The film chronicles the experiences of Florence Feldman who, for 10 years, served as a caregiver as her mother slowly sank into dementia. The event offers an hour of support and understanding, as well as Feldman’s insights about meeting caregivers’ needs. Admission to the event is free.
