Joshua Tree National Park will be expanding the Cottonwood Visitor Center on the southern border of the park. The current visitor center is a 20-year-old double-wide trailer that can no longer meet the needs of the park’s visitors. Ground-breaking on the project is expected to start in the next two to three years, with completion by 2022. The project will be funded through the park’s existing fee program. Tickets are available now for the 13th annual Parade of Homes. This event is Reach Out Morongo Basin’s largest fundraiser of the year and features six unique and inspiring homes. This year’s Parade of Homes features two homes in Yucca Valley: Bohemian Chic, and Magic on the Mesa; two in Joshua Tree: Star Ranch and Flora Desierta; and two in Twentynine Palms: the Campbell House (formerly known as Roughley Manor) and Magical Homestead Cabin. Tickets are $25 each and include lunch at the Park Rock Café in Joshua Tree. They are available at the Z107.7 studio and Park Rock Café in Joshua Tree; in Yucca Valley at ArtFx and Furnishings and the Chamber of Commerce; and in Twentynine Palms, at the Desert Trail, Cowboy Attic, and the Chamber of Commerce. LUCKIE AVENUE CLOSES MONDAY FOR 4 WEEKS

Luckie Avenue—the street that goes through the parking lot at Luckie Park—will be closed for about four weeks, starting Monday, February 13. The parking lot will be repaved, and some of the curbs, gutters and sidewalks will be replaced.

FREE FEDERAL FOOD DISTRIBUTION

The third Monday of the month is usually the day for most of the monthly distributions of surplus federal food in the Morongo Basin. The Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino will distribute surplus food to low-income residents of the Morongo Basin Tuesday. The locations and times are:

MOJAVE VIPER YOUNG MARINE PROGRAM RECRUITING KIDS

The Mojave Viper Young Marine Program is recruiting. Managing Editor Tami Roleff has more about children who want to earn the title…The Mojave Vipers are looking for a few good … kids … who want to join their ranks as Young Marines. The Mojave Vipers Young Marine program is for children who are between 8 and 18 and are in good standing at school. This is not a “boot camp” or “scared straight” program. Parent orientation will be held at the Twentynine Palms Elementary School, 74350 Playa Vista, Friday, 6:30 to 8, and Saturday, from 9 to 10:30, in which parents will learn about the Young Marine program, recruit training, what is expected of their children, and what Young Marines get out of the program. “A FEW GOOD MEN” OPENING NIGHT GALA HAS A FEW TICKETS LEFT

The St. Joseph’s Players of Yucca Valley will present the courtroom drama, “A Few Good Men” by Arron Sorkin. The opening night gala will benefit two local charities, Relay for Life and The Glady’s Carol Scholarship Program, Inc. The opening is Friday March 3.
